Abstract

This article marks the beginning of a research project on the relationship between body and emotions in scenes of death – both epic and tragic – in Greek vase painting of the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. The study focuses on three scenes centered on the lifeless bodies of Hector and Patroclus, which document the representation of grief in Attic pottery of the second half of the sixth century BCE. It seeks to determine how grief was represented in these scenes and for what purposes. The analysis investigates the emotional manifestations and responses of the figures depicted in images dominated by the corpses of Hector and Patroclus, as well as those of the possible external “spectators”, namely the users and viewers of the vases, who were confronted with mythological paradigms of unbearable loss. Finally, the article explores
whether the emotional manifestations and responses of these different types of observers were
attuned to emotions other than grief.
