Abstract
The article examines the representation of emotions in Friedrich Schiller’s Die Räuber in light of the theories of psychophysical interaction developed in his early dissertations Philosophie der Physiologie (1779) and Versuch über den Zusammenhang der tierischen Natur des Menschen mit seiner geistigen (1780). Building on the studies of Wolfgang Riedel, the essay argues that these early writings already contain the foundations of an anthropology of the “whole human being”, a project that would shape Schiller’s philosophical through to his mature aesthetic works. After reconstructing the theoretical framework within which Schiller developed a holistic conception of human nature, the article first addresses the central conceptual issues raised in the two dissertations and then examines their dramatic reworking in Die Räuber. The guiding hypothesis of the study is that the emotions experienced by Franz and Karl Moor function in the drama as demonstrative devices: understood as dynamic forces capable of acting simultaneously upon the body and the mind, they make visible the consequences of the one-sided radicalization of rationality and sensibility, thereby revealing the necessary cooperation between the physical and the spiritual dimensions of human existence.
