Abstract
Sappho 31 V. is notoriously among the best known, cited and studied poems in ancient lyric. It has become the archetype of our representation of loving passion, the canonical pattern of a crisis of love sickness. The interpretation of the poem in a medical key is suggested by the same ancient tradition, but it can be said that because of this direction already traced, even modern exegesis, in the face of a so enigmatic text, but at the same time of a so precise symptomatic description, has investigated in medicine. The approaches attempted essentially move in the psychiatric field: Sappho would describe here phobic symptoms of a panic attack. In the light, however, of a very recent medical re-reading, which correlates the ancient poetic text with modern scientific terms and with the endocrine mechanisms that govern those symptoms, certain problematic passages are better clarified and interesting perspectives also for philological exegesis are opened.
