Abstract
The essay focuses on two testimonial works: Sulla pelle viva (1983) by Tina Merlin, on the 1963 landslide of the Vajont dam, and Chernobyl Prayer (1997) by Svetlana Alexievich, on the nuclear accident of 1986. Through this comparative reading I intend to shed light on the emotional implications of the responses to the two disasters. By combining literary analysis with an anthropological and sociological perspective, feelings such as anger and despair, but also displays of pride and resourcefulness, will be highlighted, in order to account for the variety and complexity of collective and individual experiences that arose in extreme circumstances.
